The goal of Playfair Data’s internship program is to identify and develop extraordinary raw talent; leaders and visionaries who will use data to change the world. Our interns contribute to the design and engineering of the visual analytics tools created across our diverse portfolio of clients, while developing technical, tactical, and other skills that will accelerate their success.

Internship Specifics

Work under the direction of a Data Engineer to design, prepare, and quality check a dataset to be used in a visual analytics project

Turn one insight from this work into a blog post or other piece of content that can be publicly shared on the Playfair Data site and in your portfolio

Shadow Playfair Data team members to learn about the holistic process from gathering requirements to implementation

Collaborate with other members of the Playfair Data team to meet project deadlines

 

Candidate Description

You enjoy building order out of chaos, have a keen eye for typos and other mistakes, play the detective and can troubleshoot like a pro, are comfortable with numbers, and like Excel more than Word.

 

Criteria/Details

• Open to undergraduate and graduate students (working toward a degree in Business, IT, or Analytics) or persons with an existing degree enrolled in or who have completed a related certification or non-degree program

• Undergraduate student applicants must in their senior year and within six months of graduation

• Available to international students with existing work authorization

• 250 total hours, worked in a flexible, part time capacity, over 10-12 weeks

• Compensation of $15 per hour

• Primarily remote, but some in-person meetings may be required

 

Required/Desired Skills

• Applicants should be able to:

  •     Describe different data types (String, Float, Datetime, etc.) 
  •     Discuss techniques for combining tables (Unions, types of Joins, etc.)
  •     Find and resolve common data cleaning problems (dedupe rows, standardize formatting, impute null values, detect outliers, etc.)

• Possess genuine curiosity and interest in data preparation

• Completed coursework in data analytics or engineering

• Experience with SQL, Tableau Prep, or Alteryx is a plus

• Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and G-Suite products (i.e. Gmail, Google Drive, etc.) is preferred

 

Additionally, Interns Must

• Be reliable, responsive, and conduct themselves in a professional manner

• Demonstrate a commitment to timeliness

• Possess good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, and be able to interact with a wide variety of personality types, across a variety of communication channels

• Possess excellent problem solving, critical thinking, quality assurance, and analytical skills

• Pay careful attention to detail, maintain accuracy and focus while working with data

• Be discreet and able to maintain strict client and company confidentiality

• Have the ability to use a computer keyboard and be able to tolerate repetitive motion and eye strain resulting from extensive utilization of computer hardware and software
